Parts of the country could lose power as gale force winds hit coastal areas, the Met Office has warned.

Yellow weather warnings have been issued for tomorrow night, when wind is expected to develop on the coast below London.

This includes Weymouth, Southampton, Portsmouth, Brighton and Dover.

Areas just above the coastline in Kent, such as Canterbury and Ashford, will also be affected.

These places are likely to be hit with delays to road, rail, air and ferry transport and possibly a short-term loss of power.

Those who live near beaches will probably see large waves and dramatic spray.

These 50 to 60mph gusts are being brought in by a low pressure, named Storm Claudio by Meteo France, moving eastwards through the English Channel.

The wind is expected to continue into the next day, moving over the Irish Sea’s coastal areas.

Wednesday’s yellow warning covers parts of Wales, including some of Swansea, and much of Northern Ireland.

Blackpool and towns just above Liverpool are set to experience the same weather.

Those affected on Wednesday are also at risk of power cuts and travel delays.

Gusts of 55 to 65mph are expected, especially in exposed coastal locations, with some sudden strong gusts of wind possible at times.

Heavy rain is also likely on Wednesday, especially across parts of south-western Scotland, Cumbria and western Wales.
