4 people killed in shooting at Oklahoma hospital campus in Tulsa
Eight days on from the mass shooting at an elementary school – that left 19 kids and two teachers dead, America has experienced another shooting.
Four people have been killed at a hospital campus in Oklahoma, and “multiple injuries” have been reported at the St Francis hospital campus in Tulsa.
The gunman is believed to have died from a “self-inflicted gunshot wound”, he has been described as a black man about 35 to 40 years old. The shooting lasted four to five minutes and it is reported he used a long rifle and a handgun.
Captain Richard Meulenberg told ABC that police were phoned about a man with a rifle on the second floor of the Natalie Medical Building, which “turned into an active shooter situation”.
When officers arrived on the scene, they found a few people had already been shot. “A couple were dead at that point,” he said.
He said one of the victims had died “after leaving the scene to try to get medical aid.”
At present, the police have no reason to believe the gunman was targeting a specific person.
White House ‘monitoring’ the situation
US President Joe Biden has been briefed on the shooting, and the White House said it was “closely monitoring the situation”, and has reached out to state and local officials to offer support.
Traffic was shut down outside the complex, with dozens of police cars at the scene.
The shooting comes just eight days on from the mass killing of 21 people – including 19 kids at a school in Uvalde, Texas, prompting calls for tougher gun regulation in the US.
