    The Olympics, Paralympics, golf’s Ryder Cup and football’s European Championship, F1 championships all took place after a year-long delay. 2021 saw massive sporting moments that included a relatively unknown British teenager winning the US Open and a historic run for the Three Lions.

    Tom Daley wins Olympic diving gold

    British diver Tom Daley won gold at the summer Tokyo Olympics. Daley won alongside diving partner Matty Lee in the Men’s synchronised 10m platform diving event. 

    England reach Euro 2020 final 

    Gareth Southgate led the England national team to their first final of a major tournament in 55 years and although we lost on penalties to Italy – Southgate and the Three Lions reconnected the team with the nation and brought the game home. 

    Emma Raducanu wins the US Open 

    British teenager Emma Raducanu won the US Open without dropping a single set as she beat fellow teenager Leylah Fernandez to become Britain’s first female Grand Slam champion since 1977 – and the first qualifier, male or female, to win a Grand Slam title.

    Sergio Aguero confirms retirement due to heart issue

    Football legend Sergio Aguero has announced his retirement from the sport due to a heart problem. The 33-year-old scored 427 career goals for club and country and won 20 major trophies, including the 2021 Copa America over the summer.

    Lewis Hamilton loses F1 crown to Max Verstappen

    Lewis Hamilton lost the 2021 formula 1 world title to rival Max verstappen. The controversial last race of the season was a fitting end to one of the greatest and most contentious seasons in Formula 1 history – and the arguments will rage on for some time. 

    Simone Biles withdraws from Olympic competition

    Simone Biles suffered from “the twisties” during the Tokyo Olympics and bravely took the decision to step back from the competition amid cruel jabs from tabloid media and online.  It marks a moment in sports history as the top-level gymnasts shone a light on the intense unrelenting mental pressure that sportspeople can face. 

    Naomi Osaka withdrew from the French Open 

    Naomi Osaka withdrew from the 2021 French Open after she was threatened with expulsion over her press boycott. The world number two caused a storm on the eve of the tournament when revealing she would not attend any press conferences at Roland Garros on account of mental health concerns.

    Cristiano Ronaldo returns to Manchester United 

    Twelve years since his departure, and much to fans’ delight, Cristiano Ronaldo returned to Manchester United on a two-year deal. His return is a thrilling and emotive prospect for supporters. Ronaldo is still adored at Old Trafford, his name still sung in the terraces and his achievements still a source of considerable pride.

    Tiger Woods suffers horrific car crash

    Golf legend Tiger Woods was injured after crashing his SUV into a median on a downhill road in the suburbs of Los Angeles. The 45-year-old shattered the tibia and fibula bones of his right leg, while injuries to his foot and ankle needed to be fixed with ‘screws and pins’.
