The Independent – Horror in the Channel: 12 migrants die as small boat capsizes

    September 4, 2024

The Independent says six children and a pregnant woman were among the 12 migrants who died on Tuesday when the boat they were in sank in the Channel. The paper features a large image of some of the survivors being brought ashore after being rescued.

The front page also reports that Starmer is ‘feeling the heat’ from the US after the UK suspended some arms sales to Israel.

Migrant boat seen trying to cross English Channel day after 12 people died in capsize horror

Just one day after 12 migrants died in a failed attempted crossing of the English Channel, another boat carrying several dozen people appears to be making another attempt from northern France on Wednesday, seemingly trying to head toward Britain.

Journalists on a beach in Wimereux, on the northern French coastline and close to the site of Tuesday’s deadly sinking, are broadcasting live video of an inflatable boat carrying people, seemingly migrants, out to sea.

It comes as it was revealed a pregnant woman and six children were among 12 people who died after their boat sank trying to cross the English Channel.

The French coastguard confirmed the deaths after up to 65 people were rescued off the coast of Cap Gris-Nez on Tuesday.

The local prosecutor’s office said 10 women and two men were killed in the incident, according to the BBC.

Starmer feels heat from US over partial arms ban as Netanyahu blasts ‘shameful’ decision

Sir Keir Starmer has found himself at the centre of an international storm over his government’s decision to restrict arms sales to Israel just as mourners were burying six hostages killed in Gaza.

The move to halt 30 of the 350 arms export licences was condemned by Benjamin Netanyahu as “shameful”, while the White House has made it clear it will not be following Britain’s lead.

Joe Biden’s national security communications adviser, John Kirby, said: “Every nation can speak for themselves, on how and to what degree that they support Israel. We’re going to continue to do what we have to do to support Israel’s defensive capabilities.”

The issue has also blown up in the Tory leadership contest, with candidates lining up to attack foreign secretary David Lammy’s announcement.

Even Boris Johnson got involved, tweeting: “Why are Lammy and Starmer abandoning Israel? Do they want Hamas to win?”
