    UK’s full recovery could take until 2024, says EY report

    The Guardian says the UK’s economic recovery from the Covid-19 crisis could take 18 months longer than expected with hopes of a V-shaped recovery fading fast, according to a leading economic forecaster.

    Britain’s economic output is not expected to return to its 2019 level until the end of 2024, the EY Item Club said on Monday in its latest projections on the health of the UK economy. It had previously expected GDP to match fourth-quarter 2019 size in early 2023.

    Spain insists it’s safe amid new breakouts

    BBC News says Spain has said outbreaks of new Covid-19 cases are isolated and under control after the UK abruptly ordered people coming from the country to quarantine.

    Infections have risen sharply in parts of Spain recently as restrictions were eased. Some regions have taken measures including making face masks mandatory.

    “Spain is safe for Spaniards and for tourists,” the foreign minister said.

    China reports virus spike as global cases pass 16mn 

    France24 says China on Monday reported its highest number of coronavirus cases in three months, part of a worrying swell of second and third-wave infections that are hitting Asia and Europe.

    Australia has been rocked by its deadliest surge since the start of the pandemic, Hong Kong is experiencing record daily numbers and Spain’s caseload has tripled in the last fortnight.

    Tunisia’s travel agencies hit as coronavirus pandemic pummel tourism 

    Arab News says Tunisia’s travel brokers took a massive hit during the first half as the coronavirus pandemic pummeled the country’s tourism industry, which accounts for up to 14 per cent national output.

    Business in the travel brokerage sector, with about 1,300 travel agencies and nearly 20,000 travel agents, fell by up to 80 per cent during the first half, Hatem Salhi, a senior official representing the industry, said in a report from state news agency TAP.

    Vietnam evacuates tourists as coronavirus returns: live updates

    Aljazeera says Vietnam has ordered the evacuation on Monday of at least 80,000 tourists from the central city of Da Nang following the re-emergence of the coronavirus.

    The government said on Monday it needs four days to implement the evacuation in Da Nang after three residents of the city tested positive of the coronavirus. 

    The country raised its alert level once again after medical officials detected the country’s first few locally transmitted cases in three months.

    Abe says no need for new emergency declaration as cases surge

    Japan Times says the government does not think it necessary to declare a state of emergency over the novel coronavirus again, Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said, despite a nationwide surge in the number of cases.

    “We’re doing careful monitoring with a strong sense of tension, but we’re not in a situation that immediately warrants the issuance of a fresh state of emergency declaration,” Abe told reporters.

    Gone With The Wind star dies aged 104

    Sky News says Dame Olivia de Havilland, who played Melanie Hamilton in Gone With The Wind, has died at the age of 104.

    The star passed away in Paris, her representative confirmed, saying the world had “lost an international treasure”.

    The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences said Dame Olivia was a “mainstay of Hollywood’s Golden Age and an immeasurable talent”.

    Bournemouth: Eddie Howe refuses to discuss future after relegation

    BBC Sport says Bournemouth boss Eddie Howe would not be drawn on his future as he described relegation from the Premier League as “the hardest moment of my career”.

    Howe will speak to the Cherries’ owners before deciding his next step after their five-year stay in the top flight ended despite a 3-1 win at Everton.

    Instead, Aston Villa stayed up after their 1-1 draw at West Ham.
