Europe may be fighting worse Covid outbreak than UK ‘because it shunned AstraZeneca jab’

The Metro says Britain could be avoiding the current Covid wave sweeping Europe because it has used the AstraZeneca jab more widely, scientists say.

The Oxford vaccine, which was largely shunned by doctors and politicians on the continent, is now thought to be providing longer-lasting immunity than others.

As the jab was mainly given to older age groups in the UK, the country is now seeing far fewer hospitalisations than its neighbours, despite high case numbers.

But in the early stages of their rollouts, several countries including France, Spain, Belgium and Germany, restricted the AstraZeneca vaccine to under-65s.
