Boris Johnson says response shows ‘might of UK union’

BBC News says the response to the pandemic has shown the “sheer might” of the UK union, PM Boris Johnson has said.

The PM is heading to Scotland this Thursday. The trip, a year on since he became PM, will see Mr Johnson meet members of the armed forces and their families.

He said troops had done “vital work” to support the NHS during the pandemic and praised Treasury job retention schemes.

But the SNP said the visit showed Mr Johnson was “in a panic” about rising support for Scottish independence.

Deserted beaches, empty bars: Covid-19 devastates Thailand’s tourist islands

The Guardian says the streets of Koh Samui, one of Thailand’s most popular tourist destinations, are eerily quiet. Along Chaweng’s Beach Road, a usually raucous party area, shuttered shops stretch into the distance.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, it was buzzing with traffic. Now, taxi drivers sit on the roadside, with little hope of finding customers. Where bikini-clad sunseekers once browsed souvenir shops and drank at neon-lit bars, a lone street dog stretches on the pavement.

France24 says Brazil and Argentina registered daily records for confirmed coronavirus cases on Wednesday, pushing the total number of cases in Latin America past 4 million and underlining the difficulty the region faces in controlling the pandemic.

Trump could learn from Europe’s leaders, who’ve begun charting a recovery from Covid-19

CNN says it was the first time Europe’s leaders had seen each other face to face since the pandemic swept across the continent, shredding the European Union and causing untold pain and economic suffering, followed in most quarters by a recovery unlike anything experienced in the United States.

With 27 different agendas, it was a model of how to deal with a critical issue of money.

Late on Monday, there was unanimity on the largest financial project ever attempted on the continent — a total recovery package of $858 billion.

Almost a quarter of New Dehli has coronavirus, says study

Aljazeera says almost a quarter of people in New Delhi have had the coronavirus, according to a study that cast serious doubt on the official numbers both in the capital and across India.

Blood tests on 21,387 randomly selected people across the city conducted by the National Centre for Disease Control found that 22.86 per cent of them had IgG antibodies – indicating past exposure to the virus.

‘Goals galore, fireworks and a red sky – a spectacular end to Liverpool’s season’

BBC Sport says the fireworks started at Anfield long before that Premier League trophy was presented to Liverpool on the Kop – normally the beating heart of the club’s support but instead adorned by flags on this night of celebration.

Liverpool’s 5-3 win against Chelsea, a fittingly entertaining finale to their third successive unbeaten Premier League season at Anfield, was played out to the soundtrack of thunderous explosions, red lights in the sky and the smell of cordite.
