RT News says the number of people across the UK suffering from depression has almost doubled during the coronavirus pandemic, according to new data from the Office of National Statistics (ONS).

The ONS said 19 per cent of adults reported some form of depression during June, compared with 10 per cent in the nine months leading up to March 2020. The most common types of depression listed by people were stress and anxiety.

World Bank calls for greater debt relief for poorer countries in wake of Covid-19

The Guardian says the head of the World Bank has called for a more ambitious debt relief plan for poor countries after warning that the Covid-19 recession is turning into a depression in the most challenging parts of the globe.

In an interview with the Guardian, David Malpass raised the prospect of the first systematic write-off of debts since the 2005 Gleneagles agreement as he said fresh Bank figures due out next month would show an extra 100 million people had been pushed into poverty by the crisis.

France makes wearing facemasks at work compulsory from next month

Euronews says facemasks will be mandatory in all workplaces as of next month, from the Paris business district to factories in the provinces, as it tries to contain the growing virus infections without having to shut down the economy.

The announcement by the Labour Ministry makes France one of the relatively few countries in the world that are universally requiring workers to wear facemasks on the job, though they’re routinely worn in many Asian countries and increasingly required in public places beyond.

US postal chief backs down on controversial changes amid outcry

France24 says US Postmaster General Louis DeJoy on Tuesday suspended all main service changes until after the November election, bowing to an outcry by Democrats that the moves appeared to be an attempt at boating President Trump’s re-election chances.

The reversal follows complaints that the cuts could slow the handling of mail-in ballots, which could count for half of all voters in the election as the coronavirus pandemic raises fears of crowds.

Arab News says 90% of patients in Saudi Arabia so far diagnosed with the coronavirus virus had recovered, health officials announced on Tuesday.

And the latest batch of 4,526 recoveries represented more than double the number of new daily cases in the Kingdom, said the Ministry of Health. However, the infections total has now passed the 300,000 mark.

The number of recoveries in the country had been fluctuating but has maintained momentum over figures for newly confirmed cases with total recoveries now at 272,911.

Australian PM says Covid-19 vaccine should be compulsory

Aljazeera says Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison says the coronavirus vaccine should be compulsory for all Australians with only limited medical exceptions.

He told local radio station 3AW the vaccination should be “as mandatory as you can possibly make it” and the stakes were too high to allow the disease to continue to spread.

Australia has signed a deal to secure supplies of a coronavirus vaccine being developed by Oxford University and AstraZeneca should it pass clinical trials.
