The grass-court surfaces are impractical for tennis, with their low, sometimes uneven bounce and baselines that resemble sandpits after two weeks of hot weather.
And if the sun doesn’t shine, as it flatly refused to on Monday, the courts are kept under protective covers at the first sign of the famous British summer.
