Toto Wolff Initially Critical of Netflix’s Drive to Survive but Has Changed His Tune

Mercedes Formula 1 team principal Toto Wolff has confessed that he was initially skeptical of Netflix’s acclaimed docuseries Drive to Survive, citing concerns over factual inaccuracies. Despite its pivotal role in enhancing the sport’s popularity in the United States, Wolff, whose team opted not to participate in the show’s inaugural season, found early episodes unappealing.

Why Wolff ‘Hated’ Drive to Survive

Wolff’s disdain for the series stemmed from its dramatization of racing narratives. He recounted an early viewing where an episode focused on a rivalry between drivers Fernando Alonso and Carlos Sainz, which exaggerated their competition levels. “I thought, that’s not for me. Switched it off. Didn’t even watch the second one,” Wolff remarked, expressing his frustration with the portrayal of events.

    Realisation of its Value

However, as the 2019 season unfolded, Wolff’s perspective shifted dramatically. A conversation with a friend revealed that her sons had become enamoured with the show, prompting a pivotal moment for Wolff. “My sons love Drive to Survive,” she said, leading him to realise that the series was captivating a new audience for Formula 1.

    Unexpected Benefits of Non-participation

Ironically, Mercedes’s decision not to feature in the show allowed Drive to Survive to shine a spotlight on less prominent teams and drivers. “Because we didn’t feature, it gave Netflix the opportunity to show smaller teams and drivers that were not so much in the spotlight,” Wolff noted. This strategy inadvertently helped the series gain a broader appeal.

    Continued Importance of the Series

As Drive to Survive enters its seventh season, it remains a cornerstone of Formula 1’s efforts to cultivate new fans. Wolff and his team are now regular participants in the series, contributing to a narrative that has transformed team principals like him into household names. Apple executive Eddy Cue remarked how the show elevated Wolff to ‘movie star’ status within the F1 community.

    Conclusion

Toto Wolff’s journey from skepticism to advocacy showcases the evolving landscape of sports media. What started as a perceived dramatization has become an instrumental force in expanding Formula 1’s reach, particularly in the American market. As the series continues to engage viewers, Wolff and Mercedes embrace their role in this captivating narrative, illustrating how perceptions can shift in the face of unexpected opportunities.
