Why Virgil van Dijk angrily confronted Manchester United star in Anfield tunnel after goalless draw

Van Dijk also took aim at United in a post-match interview

Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk confronted Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana in the tunnel following the goalless draw at Anfield.

After a harrowing 7-0 defeat on Merseyside last season, United turned in a resilient display to frustrate Liverpool and end the hosts’ 100 per cent record at home this season.

Liverpool skipper van Dijk was not impressed with United’s performance, however, insisting ‘only one team was trying to win the game’ and the visitors would ‘be buzzing with a point’.

Before that interview with Sky Sports, the Netherlands international also took aim for what he felt was Onana or United’s time-wasting tactics, approaching the goalkeeper in the tunnel after the game, talkSPORT report.

Van Dijk reportedly told Onana ‘because of you we only played a half hour game,’ with the United goalkeeper responding with a smile.

Onana became the first goalkeeper to keep a Premier League clean sheet at Anfield since January having helped keep out the hosts.

‘It could be better,’ he told BEIN Sports. ‘We came here to win. We didn’t have the result we want but we have to keep fighting because we have a big responsibility to try win every game.

Asked if Sunday was one of his best days at the club since his summer arrival from Inter Milan, he added: ‘No. The most important thing is not the clean sheet. The most important thing is three points.

‘A clean sheet is nice but it is not about that. It is about the team and we didn’t win. It is a good point but we have to look forward and look forward to the coming games.’

After defeats to Bournemouth and Bayern Munich coming into this game, Erik ten Hag was pleased with the resilience shown by his side.

‘You have to fight always for the badge,’ he told Sky Sports.

‘We play in very high highs and also sometimes in very low lows. If you want to achieve something in a season you can’t be below certain limits so we have to get the consistency.

‘This was a very good performance, you saw Liverpool’s results at home and we got a clean sheet. In the second half we had some very good chances, then you can take the points from here but we are pleased with the performance of the team.’
