Manchester United opted to sign Rasmus Hojlund over the likes of Harry Kane and Evan Ferguson because they feel the Dane will be a better long-term investment.
The Red Devils spent £72m on signing the Denmark international from Serie A side Atalanta in the summer.
That’s despite the fact that Hojlund joined the Italians for just £15m in 2022.
United had been heavily linked with a move for then-Tottenham star Kane, who was entering the final 12 months of his deal in London.
However, United were reluctant to pay the figures associated with the 30-year-old and felt Spurs would never realistically consider selling to a Premier League rival.
While United are admirers of Ferguson, Brighton had already sold Alexis Mac Allister to Liverpool and had factored in Moises Caicedo’s departure.

The Seagulls were therefore under no pressure to sell, and would demand a figure of around £120m for the Irishman.
While Hojlund cost £72m, his salary is believed to be around £50,000-a-week which is significantly below the reported £400,000-a-week salary that Kane commands in Munich.
United therefore feel they’ve made a shrewd investment in the Dane, and that he will continue to grow in the coming years.
Hojlund has three goals to his name this term, with all three coming in the Champions League.
He’s expected to start against his former side, FC Copenhagen, at Old Trafford tonight.
