The UN’s annual climate conference – called COP27 this year – is almost upon us

World leaders and representatives of over 190 countries will attend the two-week summit to make plans to tackle climate change and planet Earth’s rising temperature.

UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has been criticised for saying he will not attend the event, saying last week he was too busy, prompting critics to accuse him of not taking the environmental crisis seriously.

He is considering changing his focus and heading to the meeting, it has been claimed in what could be his first U-turn.

So, when will that be, and where it be held?

When is the COP27 climate change conference?

COP27 is due to take place in November 2022 after a Covid-related delay.

The UN’s Conference of the Parties will begin on Sunday, November 6, 2022, and end on Friday, November 18.

Originally, COP27 was due to take place in November 2021 – but COP26 had to be postponed in 2020 due to coronavirus restrictions.

So, the conferences were bumped up by a year.

    Which country will host COP27?

It’s been announced that the annual event will be held in the resort area of Sharm El-Sheikh.

Last year’s conference was hosted in the UK – via green city Glasgow in Scotland.

COP28’s location has also been revealed as the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in the Middle East.

That conference will take place in November 2023, though the exact start date has yet to be decided.

    What does COP27 stand for?

COP27 stands for Conference of the Parties of the UNFCCC, the more commonly used name of the 2022 United Nations Climate Change Conference.

The ’27’ is a reference to it being the 27th United Nations Climate Change conference.

The conference has been held annually since 1992, which was the first UN climate agreement.
