WhatsApp and Instagram back online after Meta outages

WhatsApp and Instagram services have been restored following a global outage that disrupted several Meta-owned platforms on Wednesday.

The outage began around 18:00 GMT, according to the tracking site Downdetector, and affected users in the UK, Europe, Asia, Australia, South America, and the US. Reports indicated over 18,000 issues with WhatsApp and more than 22,000 with Facebook.

Meta acknowledged the disruption, citing a “technical issue” that temporarily impacted some users’ access. The company assured users it was working to resolve the problems quickly.

By Wednesday evening, WhatsApp shared an update:

“We’re aware of some issues accessing WhatsApp. We’re actively working on a solution and starting to see a return to normal for most people. We expect things to be back to normal shortly,”

The issues varied from users being unable to access the apps entirely to feeds not refreshing.

Meta’s platforms, including Facebook, WhatsApp, and Instagram, are among the most widely used globally, with Facebook alone boasting over three billion monthly active users.

As of now, Facebook has not confirmed whether all related issues have been fully resolved.
