The upcoming Minecraft film is taking shape – with Jack Black reportedly taking on the role of Steve, and the recent reveal of a possible release date.
With over 300million copies sold and 140m people playing the game each month, the time for a Minecraft film adaptation is ripe.
Black, 54, seems to agree and is keen on continuing his streak of doing video game adaptations, as he did when playing the role of Bowser in the Super Mario Bros. Movie last year.
This time the actor is taking on a role as Steve, one of Minecraft’s main playable characters in the video game, according to a report.
If that’s the case then Black will go from villain in the Super Mario Bros. Movie to hero in Minecraft, according to Deadline.
He will join the current cast of Jason Momoa, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, and Sebastian Eugene Hansen.

The Minecraft movie will be a live-action adaptation of the popular sandbox video game, published by Warner Bros. Pictures.
The film is set to come out in 2025, with Variety reporting April 4 as the exact release date.
There’s no official plot released to the public yet, but the film’s IMDB page states: ‘The malevolent Ender Dragon sets out on a path of destruction, prompting a young girl and her group of unlikely adventurers to set out to save the Overworld.’

Filming started in December 2023, so there aren’t any trailers our yet, and we’ll have to wait a while longer for the first look at what Minecraft in real-life will look like.
The Minecraft film will be directed by Jared Hess, who previously directed Napoleon Dynamite and Nacho Libre (the latter also including Black).
Black is also known for his musical side, and still performs with his band Tenacious D.

He also sang a love song about Peach as Bowser in the Super Mario Bros. Movie, and it wouldn’t be a surprise if he sings a song or two in the Minecraft film as well.
Minecraft developer Mojang Studios and Microsoft – who bought the studio and the game in 2014 – will hope that the Minecraft adaptation follows the success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, which had the best opening day of any animated film in the UK ever.
It’s a productive time for video game adaptations, as there are numerous TV series adaptations too such as The Last Of Us and Halo, and an impressive-looking Fallout TV show in the works as well.
