Since last year, the UK has been rocked by large-scale industrial action across multiple sectors, and the country continues to feel the effects. With May now around the corner, even the royal coronation won’t be free from strike action.
King Charles III is due to be crowned on May 6, 2023, with more and more details being made public as we get closer to the day.
However, several unions have announced that they will be taking strike action both in the run-up to and during the King’s coronation.
So, which workers will be walking out during the coronation weekend?
Here is what you need to know.
Passport office workers
1000 members of the PCS Union (the union representing government workers and contractors) are currently on strike, with their final strike day being the coronation day itself. While the industrial action may cause delays to those looking to renew or secure a passport during the summer holidays, it seems unlikely to affect the coronation directly.
Strike dates: April 3 – May 6, 2023
Traffic wardens
Members of the GMB union employed by NSL (a contractor used by Westminster council to handle parking enforcement) will be taking industrial action in the days leading up to the King’s coronation, as well as on the day of the event itself, leading to fears of travel disruption on what is sure to be one of the busiest days the capital will see this year.

GMB Organiser, Alex Etches, has said: ‘If NSL fail to make a sensible offer in time, we’ll see just what an important job our members do as the King makes his way from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Cathedral on Saturday May 6.’
Commenting on the implications for the coronation, Graham Conway at Select Car Leasing told Metro.co.uk: ‘The potential implications of a traffic warden strike during a high-traffic event like a coronation can be significant. Without traffic wardens to manage the flow of vehicles and ensure that drivers are following the rules of the road, there is a risk of congestion, accidents and delays.’
Strike dates: May 2, 4, and 6, 2023 (also taking ‘action short of a strike’ from May 1 to 8).
BBC Local Network journalists
BBC Local Network journalists will be striking the day before the coronation in protest at BBC’s plans to cuts increase the amount of programme sharing between local stations and cuts to local programming, as well as potential job losses.

The NUJ (National Union of Journalists) states: ‘The plans will result in a number of job losses and journalists are now having to re-apply for their own jobs. The union says the proposals will slowly kill off local radio which has 5.7m loyal listeners.’
The strike may affect regional coverage in the build-up to the coronation but is likely to have a more significant impact on coverage of the local election results the day before.
Strike date: May 5, 2023
Heathrow Airport security workers
Over 1,400 security workers that are members of the Unite union are set to strike around the coronation day, with the potential to cause travel chaos for anyone flying in to see the coronation from another country.

The level of disruption is currently unclear, as the union claims their last set of strikes over Easter ’caused considerable disruption’ and ‘resulted in hundreds of flights being cancelled’. In contrast, Heathrow Airport Ltd said their contingency plans’ kept the airport running smoothly throughout the strike period.’
