The Early May bank holiday is almost here promising a day of leisure for many.
And that’s not all, with May boasting an extra bank holiday thanks to the Coronation of King Charles III.
Many of us use the extra day off work to catch up with loved ones or tackle a mountain of chores that have been pushed to the side.
Others might want to hit the shops for a bit of retail therapy before the Monday blues – now shifted to Tuesday – set in.
But are shops open as normal on May 1? Here’s what you need to know.
What shops are open on bank holiday Monday?

Unlike Easter Sunday, where trading laws mean stores over a certain size need to close for the day, this bank holiday has no such laws around it.
However, stores might be operating under different opening hours so employees can finish earlier or start later to enjoy the bank holiday.
Most supermarkets will be open during their normal hours, though shoppers are advised to check with their local branch beforehand.
