A West Brom fan has died after suffering a medical emergency at their match with Sheffield Wednesday on Saturday.
Distressed supporters in the away end at Hillsbrough called for the Championship game to be halted as the fan was taken ill during the first-half.
The match continued as medics attended to the supporter, who was then carried out of the stadium for further treatment.
It has now been confirmed that the supporter has passed away, with West Brom manager Carlos Corberan saying it was ‘the worst news’.
‘West Bromwich Albion Football Club is devastated to learn of the tragic passing of a supporter following a medical emergency during Saturday’s fixture at Sheffield Wednesday,’ a statement read.
‘The club has made contact with the supporter’s family to pass on its condolences and asks that they are allowed to grieve privately.
‘The thoughts of all of us will remain with the supporter’s loved ones at this desperately sad time.’
West Brom boss Corberan added: ‘Unfortunately we received the worst news.
‘Our supporter passed away after today’s game. All my thoughts are with his family in this very sad moment. RIP.’
Sheffield Wednesday, meanwhile, said: ‘We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of a West Bromwich Albion supporter during today’s game following a medical emergency.
‘Our hearts go out to the supporter’s family, loved ones and the wider WBA community at this incredibly difficult time.’
In response to West Brom’s statement on X, an account called Baggie Steve said: ‘It is with great sadness that I have to report that my brother who was taken ill during the match has sadly passed away.
‘My son was with him and is absolutely devastated by the events that unfolded as we all are. My thanks to the Albion fan who did her best to resuscitate him.’
On the pitch, Sheffield Wednesday scored a late winner to seal a 3-2 victory over previously unbeaten West Brom.
The hosts, who had won just once before Saturday’s fixture, led 2-0 at half-time before Championship leaders West Brom fought back to level proceedings in the 84th minute.
But Owls substitute Anthony Musaba scored the winner two minutes later to earn Sheffield United their second victory of the season and climb out of the relegation zone.
