Residents of the major southern Russian city of Rostov-on-Don woke up to military vehicles taking up positions and cordoning off streets, with some taking the opportunity to pose for photos with tanks.
It comes after the owner of the Wagner private military company Yevgeny Prigozhin called for an armed rebellion aimed at ousting Russia’s defence minister and claimed that he and his troops had reached the city after crossing the border from Ukraine.
