‘Our future is golden’
The PM finishes his statement by saying he will continue to serve the public’s interests until his replacement is found.
“Being prime minister is an education in itself – I’ve travelled to every part of UK and I’ve found so many people possessed of such boundless British originality and so willing to tackle old problems in new ways.
“Even if things can sometimes seem dark now, our future together is golden,” Johnson says.
He receives some applause as he leaves.

‘Sad to give up’
The PM says he’s sad to give up the best job in the world, “but them’s the breaks”

‘Painful to not see protects through’
PM says no one in politics is “remotely indispensable” and says “our brilliant and Darwinian system will produce another leader”.
He says he will give the new leader as much support as he can.
Johnson says it is preposterous to change governments – rejecting the idea of a general election – when we’re “delivering so much and such vast mandates, when the economic scene is so difficult domestically and internationally”.
“I regret to not be successful in arguments and it’s painful not to see through so many ideas and projects.”
Keep levelling up
PM says we must keep levelling up, unleashing the potential of every part of the UK.
If we can do that we will be the most prosperous in Europe, he says.

It is clearly now the will of the parliamentary Conservative Party that there should be a new leader of the party and therefore a new prime minister, Boris Johnson says.
Not a single admission of having done anything wrong, or of having any regrets, in Boris Johnson's resignation statement, but he does take the time to blame Conservative MPs for their "eccentric" decision to remove him.

UK awaits PM’s resignation
The PM is expected to appear before a podium outside 10 Downing Street in the next few minutes.
The PM has around 30 MPs gathered in support, outside No 10 – its a small group of MPs considering how big he won in 2019.
Today he is expected to announce his resignation as Tory MP leader. He is expected to remain PM until autumn so the Tories can elect a new leader to replace him.
Many MPs want him gone now.
Jacob Rees Mogg is amongst the MPs gathered outside No 10 along with the PM’s wife Carrie Johnson and their baby. The PM’s Narrine Dorries is also in attendance.

Today, at around 12:30 pm, Boris Johnson is expected to stand outside the famous No 10 black door and deliver his speech, resigning as leader of the Tory party. But sources say he intends to stay as prime minister until the autumn, in a caretaker role – (until the Tories have elected a new party leader).

The PM is currently in No 10 appointing new ministers to replace the 59 MPs who have quit since the dramatic double resignation of Rishi Sunak and Sajid Javid.
He has no plans to leave Downing Street until a new Tory leader has been elected to replace him.
But some Tory MPs and the opposition are calling on him to leave as soon as possible to avoid government paralysis.
Labour leader Sir Keir Stamer has said if the PM does not leave and appoint someone else as a caretaker PM, then Labour will call a vote of no confidence on the whole government.
Former minister Sir Bob Neil told MPs there was a “serious question mark” over how long a “caretaker” prime minister could stay in place.
“Might it not be in everybody’s interest to speed up the transition as much as possible?” he added.

PM quitting – ‘good news for the country’
Starmer says the news of the prime minister’s resignation was “good news for the country” but “should have happened long ago.” Sir Keir accused the PM of “lies, scandal and fraud on an industrial scale” and said, “those who have been complaint should be utterly ashamed.”
Sir Ed Davey – leader of the Lib Dems – said it’s long been clear the PM was “unfit to lead our country” adding the “public won’t forgive the Conservatives for propping him up for so long”.
Whilst Scottish First Minister and SNP leader Nicola Sturgeon said there was a “widespread sense of relief that the chaos of the last few days (indeed months) will come to an end”.

How did we get here?
After a wild 48 hours with started with the shocking resignation of Sajid Javid and Rishi Sunak, a tough PMQs session was then followed by a bruising liaison committee meeting. The PM left that meeting to be met by some of the cabinet waiting at No 10, telling the PM it’s time to resign. In that time, many more resignations rolled in.
But last night the PM remained defiant, saying he would not leave his role. But by this morning, Boris Johnson has accepted the reality and is ready to step aside. At the time of writing, a massive 59 MPs have resigned from Boris Johnson’s government.
