Wales 2-1 Austria: Gareth Bale takes Wales one step closer to World Cup qualifier hopes
Gareth Bale whipped in two incredible goals in last night’s game against Austra to take Wales one step closer to qualifying for their first World Cup since 1958.
In the fifth minute, Austria’s Christoph Baumgartner hit the crossbar, just moments before Bale’s free-kick send Wales up in front of an ecstatic home crowd in Cardiff.
Early in the second half Bales struck again, shooting on a turn from a short corner.
Marcel Sabitzer’s deflected shot brought Austria back into the game but Wales was able to hold off an equaliser with great defensive display.
Wales will now face Scotland or Ukraine in their play-off final. A one-off tie that was meant to be played next Tuesday has been postponed because of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Scotland and Ukraine’s fixture is expected to be played in June, with the play-off final set to follow later the same month. However, it is yet to be confirmed.
