Vengaboys are probably Eurovision personified – vibrant, fun, and energetic with catchy pop tunes… but did you know they were actually rejected from the contest?
The Dutch Eurodance music group delighted thousands of Eurovision fanatics this weekend as they took to the stage at the Eurovision Village ahead of the contest beginning in Liverpool.
Comprising of Kim Sasabone, Denise Post-Van Rijswijk, Robin Pors, and Donny Latupeirissa sported fluorescent outfits with sequins and cowboy hats as they performed hits including the iconic Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!
The Rotterdam-based music stars have also said they get asked to represent their country in Eurovision ‘all the time’ but, sadly for us, it’s never happened.
Speaking to MailOnline, Vengaboys shared that they send in Boom Boom to the annual contest ‘every year’ but always get rejected.
They said: ‘We get asked this all the time. We get asked every year by everyone but the people in charge. We would love to… maybe next year, who knows?’

Admitting they’ve tried to represent the Netherlands before, they continued: ‘We tried it with Boom Boom. Every year we send in Boom Boom but they don’t accept it.
‘It has to be a new song. We need to write a new song that’s a little bit naughty, and enter that in.’
Indeed, the rules state that the track performed by each country must be new material.
As stated on the official website, ‘songs (lyrics and music compositions) submitted to represent the country of each participating broadcaster’s country in the ESC must be original and must not have been released and/or publicly performed in part or in full before the release date’.

The maximum duration of each song is three minutes and any song/performance which is longer ‘shall not be eligible to participate’.
Again, Boom Boom is 3 minutes and 23 seconds long, further disqualifying it, as iconic as it’d be on the Eurovision stage.
Nineties icons Vengaboys were no one-hit wonders though, of course, as they’re also famous for party anthems including We’re Going to Ibiza, and We Like to Party.
They returned to the UK a few weeks ago ahead of their 25th anniversary.
The group is also set to perform at a bunch of festivals around the country this summer before flying off to Dubai and Ibiza.

Meanwhile, as you’ll have probably heard, the 2023 Eurovision Song Contest was groundbreaking and historic in many ways, particularly as Sweden took the crown.
After winning for the first time in 2012 with Euphoria, the Swedish songstress triumphed once more, this time with her song Tattoo.
She made history as the only woman to have won the contest twice, while Sweden ties with Ireland now as the only participants to have lifted the trophy seven times.

It was a tight race, though, particularly as crowd favourite Käärijä of Finland shot up the leaderboard thanks to the public vote.
But it was the year of Loreen, meaning Eurovision will return to her home country next year on the 50th anniversary since Abba’s win.
