US vows support for Israel amid fears Iran attack on Israel imminent
Joe Biden has promised Israel his country’s “ironclad” support amid concerns Tehran could launch an attack, in response to a deadly Israeli strike that killed senior Iranians.
Israel attacked the Iranian consulate in Syria 10 days ago.
Joe Biden warned that Iran is threatening to launch a “significant attack” in response to that attack.
“We’re going to do all we can to protect Israel’s security,” he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, Iran’s leader said the Israel attack was equivalent to an attack on Iran itself. “When they attacked our consulate area, it was like they attacked our territory,” Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said in a televised speech.
“The evil regime must be punished, and it will be punished.”
It’s not clear what sort of reprisal attack will take place. Experts believe it could happen via an Iranian proxy like Hezbollah, as Iran does not have the military capacity for a significant confrontation. Hence, a direct strike on Israel is unlikely.
There has also been a suggestion that Iran could target with a cyberattack.
