US and UK sanctions on Iran following Tehran’s weekend assault on Israel
The U.S. and U.K. impose new sanctions on Iran following an unprecedented attack on Israel, raising concerns of a wider conflict in the Middle East. The sanctions target individuals and entities involved in producing drones used in the attack, as well as firms in the steel and automotive industries supporting Iran’s military. President Joe Biden vows to continue imposing sanctions to degrade Iran’s military capabilities.
In addition to Treasury’s sanctions, the U.S. Commerce Department is restricting Iran’s access to basic commercial-grade microelectronics. Lawmakers are also pushing forward legislation to financially punish Iran. The actions come after U.S. officials warned of new sanctions in response to Iran’s regional activities and to prevent future attacks.
Iran’s attack on Israel was in retaliation for an alleged Israeli strike on Iran’s consulate in Syria. World leaders are urging restraint to avoid further escalation. European Union leaders have pledged to increase sanctions on Iran, targeting its drone and missile deliveries to proxies in Gaza, Yemen, and Lebanon. EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell warns of the potential for a regional war in the Middle East and calls for de-escalation.
