Universities accused of ‘spying’ on student protesters for police
British universities have been accused of ‘collaborating’ with police to monitor students amid a wave of pro-Palestine protests.
From telling one university the flying of a Palestinian flag on campus does not ‘look well’ on their establishment to expressing worries over the ‘number of foreign students’ admitted at another, police forces have had a ‘cosy’ relationship with university administrators in recent months.
An investigation by Liberty Investigates and Metro.co.uk, the editorially independent journalism wing of the human rights advocacy group Liberty, found universities shared protesters’ data with police despite not being asked to do so. One University of York student said officers visited her home on November 19 to refer her to the counter-terror programme Prevent because she posted, ‘From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,’ on X at a campus rally.
Andy Murray and Emma Raducanu sign up for Wimbledon mixed doubles
Andy Murray will play mixed doubles with Emma Raducanu at Wimbledon 2024, the All England Club have confirmed.
Murray is not featuring in the men’s singles after he failed to recover in time from surgery on a spinal cyst – pulling out of Tuesday’s match against Tomas Machac – a huge blow to the fans who wanted to see him one last time before retirement.
The 37-year-old British hero, a two-time Wimbledon champion, is still due to play in the men’s doubles, though, alongside his brother Jamie Murray. The Murray brothers face John Peers and Rinky Hijikata on either Thursday or Friday in what could be one of the former world No.1’s last-ever matches in SW19.

The right-leaning newspapers that traditionally back the Conservative Party have welcomed the intervention of Boris Johnson – believing he can help stop the Tories from being completely wiped out.
The left-leaning newspapers are fully behind Labour’s final push, reporting that the 14 years of economic austerity and Tory failures are almost over.
Away from the election, there’s room on the front pages for pictures of Andy Murray after news came he had pulled out of his last-ever Wimbledon Singles. The back pages continue their Wimbledon coverage, and there’s room to report on the latest from the Euros.
