UK weather: snow and ice warning as commuters face widespread disruption
Commuters face widespread travel disruption after heavy snowfall and ice affected parts of the UK.
Forecasters issued several warnings from Tuesday evening through to early Wednesday after an Arctic blast has brought the “first taste of winter for many”, with further warnings anticipated.
A yellow warning for ice for much of southern England, the Midlands and eastern Wales was put in place by the Met Office from Tuesday evening to 10am on Wednesday, as it warned of developing snow showers.
Several other warnings for snow and ice have been in force across the UK, with the Met Office warning of power cuts, vehicles could be stranded and rural areas could be cut off. On Tuesday, more than 200 school closures were reported, in addition to travel disruptions for many commuters in Aberdeenshire after a Stagecoach bus toppled on its side in icy conditions.
“We’ve had a fairly mild November so far,” Met Office spokesperson Stephen Dixon told the PA Media news agency previously. “So it’ll feel like that first taste of winter for many with that snow and ice risk layered on top.”
