Government scientists warn relaxing travel rules risks importing dangerous variants

The i says a scientist advising the Government has accused ministers of “abandoning” the Covid testing system for international travel and warned that planned relaxations will increase the risk of importing infections and new virus variants.

Professor Stephen Reicher, a member of the Scientific Pandemic Insights Group on Behaviours, which feeds into the Scientific Advisory Group for Emergencies, said the Covid travel testing system, which was criticised for “ripping off” travellers, could have been improved rather than scrapped.

On Friday, the Government announced that England’s traffic light travel system would be overhauled on Monday 4 October.
