PM Boris Johnson has coronavirus, Downing Street has confirmed. He has mild symptoms and will self-isolate at Downing Street.

“He was tested for coronavirus on the personal advice of England’s chief medical officer,  Professor Chris Whitty,” a statement said.

Johnson will still be in charge of the government’s handling of the pandemic, the statement added.

His test was carried out at No 10 by NHS staff.

Over the last 24 hours I have developed mild symptoms and tested positive for coronavirus.

I am now self-isolating, but I will continue to lead the government’s response via video-conference as we fight this virus.

    “Together we will beat this.”

Johnson was last seen Thursday night, clapping outside No 10 as part of a nationwide thank you to NHS staff.

There are currently more than 11,600 confirmed cases of the virus in the UK and 578 people have died.
