UEFA Euro 2024: Is Denmark vs England on TV? kick-off, team news, predictions & where to watch

    20/06/2024 – UEFA European Championship – (Group Stage – Group C)

    Venue: Frankfurt Arena

England began their campaign with a 1-0 win over Serbia, whilst Denmark’s matchday one saw them held to a 1-1 draw.

England’s opening performance earned some stick, despite spells of great play, a few issues were glaring. Fans will be expecting an improved England – but all in all Three Lions fans should be feeling positive ahead of tonight’s game.

A win for England will be enough to send them through to the knockouts – though it won’t yet be clear where in the table they finish.

After opening their game with a 1-1 draw, a win for Denmark would see them likely go through to the knockouts, whilst a loss could potentially see them drop to third in the table (depending on the other fixture Serbia vs Slovenia).

The two nations meet for the first time since the semi-finals of Euro 2020 when the Three Lions came from behind to win 2-1 after extra time at Wembley Stadium.

    Where to watch?

The match will kick off at 17:00 BST on Thursday 20 June in Deutsche Bank Park.

The fixture will be shown live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.

    Match preview

Christian Eriksen’s Comeback at Euro 2024

Exactly 1,100 days after his cardiac arrest in Denmark’s opening game of Euro 2020, Christian Eriksen made a triumphant return to the European stage by scoring the opening goal in Denmark’s 1-1 draw with Slovenia on Sunday. The Manchester United midfielder brilliantly controlled a flick from Jonas Wind and netted a first-time shot in the 17th minute. Unfortunately, Slovenia equalised through Erik Janza’s deflected long-range effort, leaving both teams to share the points.

Denmark’s head coach Kasper Hjulmand acknowledged his team’s passivity and lack of intensity in the latter stages, urging his players to sustain their energy throughout the entire match. Despite being ranked 21st in the world and having lost only one of their last 13 international matches since March 2023, Denmark’s struggle in the European Championship continues, with just one win in their last six group games (W1 D1 L4).

The Danes face a crucial match against England on Thursday, needing a win to avoid the risk of an early exit from the tournament, reminiscent of their 2022 World Cup performance.

    England’s Solid Start

Meanwhile, England, inspired by Jude Bellingham, secured a crucial 1-0 victory over Serbia in their Group C opener. Bellingham, after a stellar debut season at Real Madrid, scored a powerful header from Bukayo Saka’s deflected cross in the 13th minute. Despite a second-half surge from Serbia, England’s defence held firm, showcasing resilience that pleased manager Gareth Southgate.

England now lead Group C, two points ahead of Denmark and Slovenia, and a win against Denmark will ensure their progression to the last 16. Remarkably, England have set a European Championship record by keeping five consecutive clean sheets in the group stage.

    Team News

    Denmark Team News

Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund, with seven goals in 15 international caps, is expected to lead Denmark’s attack alongside Jonas Wind, while Christian Eriksen will operate in the number 10 role. At 32 years and 123 days old, Eriksen recently became Denmark’s oldest scorer at the European Championship and could soon match Simon Kjaer’s record of 132 appearances.

    England Team News

For England, manager Gareth Southgate is considering whether to stick with the same starting lineup or make a few changes. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Phil Foden might move to the bench. Alexander-Arnold started in central midfield alongside Declan Rice against Serbia but could be replaced by Conor Gallagher, Kobbie Mainoo, or Adam Wharton during the group stage.

Foden struggled on the left flank and prefers playing centrally or on the right. However, with Jude Bellingham and Bukayo Saka solid in their positions, Foden may continue on the left unless Southgate opts to start Anthony Gordon, Cole Palmer, or Eberechi Eze.

Kieran Trippier, who had cramp towards the end of the Serbia match, is expected to be fit to continue at left-back, alongside Kyle Walker, John Stones, and Marc Guehi in the defense. Luke Shaw remains out due to a hamstring injury.

Captain Harry Kane, who scored the semi-final winner against Denmark at Euro 2020, will lead the attack, aiming for a greater impact after a quiet game versus Serbia.

    Predicted lineups

    Denmark possible starting lineup:

Schmeichel; Andersen, Christensen, Vestergaard; Bah, Hjulmand, Hojbjerg, Kristiansen; Eriksen; Wind, Hojlund

    England possible starting lineup:

Pickford; Walker, Stones, Guehi, Trippier; Alexander-Arnold, Rice; Saka, Bellingham, Foden; Kane

    Predictions

Three of the last four meetings between Denmark and England have seen no more than one goal scored, and another tight affair could be on the cards considering the stakes are already high at this early stage in the tournament. Denmark cannot be written off in Frankfurt and have the attacking players at their disposal to cause England one or two problems, but if the Three Lions can defend with the same resilience that got them over the line versus Serbia and Southgate gets his final-third stars to click, then they should find a way to claim another narrow victory and secure their place in the last 16. Denmark 0-1 England – (Sportsmole)

England supporters will be pleading for the opening 30 minutes of Sunday’s game to perpetuate over the full 90 on Thursday. The very best of Southgate’s England was on display in the opening stages before the limitations of their current XI manifested.

Predictability in possession without Shaw is a major concern and it will reduce their ability to control games with the ball. Serbia smelt blood in Gelsenkirchen as the contest wore on and Denmark will surely adopt an aggressive approach which will aim to completely stifle the Three Lions.

Given their opponent’s astuteness without the ball, England may have to slog through Thursday’s game and rely on the individual brilliance of their stars in attack. However, Denmark should offer more than Serbia going forward and the Danes, who should enjoy spells in the game, will work hard for a point in Frankfurt. Denmark 1-1 England – (90MIN)

England have the perfect chance to ensure qualification for the round of 16 and the opportunity to rest players in their final group game, so expect a determined performance to try and answer the questions posed after their nervy opening win. The Three Lions should have enough quality in midfield and attack to beat Denmark, though the impressive defensive duo of Stones and Geuhi will need to be way of the threat of players such as Eriksen, Hojlund and Hjulmand.
