Piastri Defends Collision with Norris as a “Racing Incident” Amid Championship Battle
AUSTIN, Texas — Oscar Piastri has defended his collision with teammate Lando Norris during the sprint race at the U.S. Grand Prix, insisting that the clash was a racing incident rather than a mistake. The incident occurred as the two drivers vied for position on the opening lap at the Circuit of the Americas, intensifying the rivalry at the top of the standings.
Piastri and Norris Clash at Austin
Piastri found himself in a tight battle with Norris as they approached Turn 1. In an attempt to overtake, he made contact with Sauber’s Nico Hülkenberg, which subsequently propelled him into Norris. This marked the second successive collision between the Mclaren teammates, following a previous incident in Singapore, leading to internal repercussions for Norris.
“A Racing Incident,” Says Piastri
Following the race, Piastri stated, “I think it’s a racing incident. I was a long way away from the apex, and the cars behind were going in pretty deep into the corner. Could I have done something a bit different? Maybe, but that would have meant letting two or three cars go by.”
He stressed the importance of trusting one’s instincts while racing, saying, “If I’d known it was three-wide behind me, I might have acted differently.”
Norris and Team’s Perspective
Norris refrained from placing blame, indicating the need for a thorough review of the incident, echoing sentiments expressed by McLaren team principal Andrea Stella. “Like all things that we do as a team, it will be reviewed,” he confirmed after the sprint race. However, he expressed frustration over missing out on earlier racing opportunities resulting from the collision.
Impact on the Championship Standings
The collision ultimately allowed Red Bull‘s Max Verstappen to gain a crucial advantage, pocketing eight points and narrowing Piastri’s lead to 55 points in the championship standings. Piastri currently stands at seven race wins to Norris’ five, with both drivers maintaining 14 podiums each across the season.
Challenges Ahead for Piastri
Piastri, despite his strong start to the season, acknowledged struggles in recent races, particularly since his victory at the Dutch Grand Prix. “I feel like it’s been a struggle for me… it’s just not clicking,” he admitted, emphasizing that his discomfort with the car has been the primary issue.
Team Dynamics and Future Reviews
Looking ahead, Stella confirmed the team’s commitment to reviewing the collision comprehensively after the race weekend. Discussions between the drivers have focused on resetting rather than dwelling on the past, with the team aiming to maintain a collaborative approach in resolving such incidents.
In a dramatic weekend full of tension and rivalry, both McLaren drivers find themselves with much to prove as the championship race heats up. The upcoming race promises further excitement as Piastri and Norris seek to regain momentum on the track.
