A BBC Breakfast presenter was left a little flustered after mistaking a guest’s medical condition for a reaction to his statement.

On Sunday’s show host Ben Boulos and co-star Sarah Campbell were discussing ‘shrinkflation’ – the process where items get smaller but stay the same price.

Retail analyst Teresa Wickham appeared on the show via video as Ben told viewers: ‘Whenever we talk about this on Money and Work it really winds people up because they’re just not getting as much for their money.’

Teresa was seen shaking her head as the camera cut to her, as Ben said: ‘You’re shaking your head Teresa, you can’t believe it either.’

The expert then responded: “No I’m shaking my head because I’ve got dystonia so don’t worry.

As Ben quickly apologised, Teresa insisted: ‘No, no, no that’s alright. I’m quite open about it but people think I disagree with them.’

At the end of the segment, Ben referred back to the awkward moment as he apologised to Teresa for his mistake once again, thanking her for her time.

He said: ‘Apologies again for my mistake at the beginning of our conversation.’

Dystonia is the name for uncontrolled and sometimes painful muscle movements (spasms).

Presenter Ben went on to acknowledge that he had “learnt something for the future.”

Ben is a regular presenter on BBC World News, BBC One and the BBC News channel, and has also appeared on BBC Breakfast.

He was previously known as Ben Bland, but in February 2021 he made the change.

Ben wanted his name to match his Jewish heritage as his ancestors changed their surname from Boulos to the most British word they thought matched it after fleeing Russian and Lithuania.

BBC Breakfast airs weekdays at 6am on BBC One.
