Trending – Tulip Siddiq resigns as calls grow for chancellor to face the sack
Domestic politics is trending across the UK news cycle today. There are calls for Chancellor Rachel Reeves to resign amid doom and gloom over the state of the UK economy.
The calls for Reeves’ resignation come as another high-profile Labour politician, Tulip Siddiq, announced she has stepped down from her role following links to an anti-corruption investigation in Bangladesh.
Both women occupy much of the front page coverage this morning as well as social media.
Publications have fallen in line with party politics, with the left claiming Siddiq has been forced out and backing Reeves to remain in her role as chancellor, whilst the right celebrates the departure of Sidiq and continues to call for Reeves to be booted from office.
The reaction
The Times says Tulip Siddiq was “forced out of office” saying she posed a “reputational risk” for the government. The Guardian says Siddiq is now the “second senior woman” to resign over ethics issues in the prime minister’s administration. The paper points out an investigation cleared her of rule-breaking. The FT says Sir Kier Starmer has kept the door open for a potential return.
The Daily Mail takes a more critical tone saying Siddiq’s resignation is a sign of Labour’s instability. The paper says Reeves is also at risk of being ousted from her role.

If she is feeling 'very depressed' and 'can't see a way out', she's clearly not a fit and proper person to be in charge of the UK economy.
Every decision she's made has turned to shit. She should do the country a favour and RESIGN! pic.twitter.com/TVnAO3x66L
There’s definitely more than just two lame ducks in Labour, but these will likely be the next to resign or be sacked.
