Tuesday’s Premier League result: Leeds outclass Southampton in second-half to win 3-0

Tuesday’s Premier League result saw Leeds United score 3 goals in the second half to secure an impressive 3-0 win against a subpar Southampton that have now failed to win a game in their last 8 Premier League matches. The win for Marcelo Bielsa’s side sees them go into 10th place, leapfrogging Arsenal.

Leeds too much for Southampton in Tuesday’s Premier League result

The first half saw both sides have chances, however, the biggest talking point of the half was when a penalty given to Southampton was overturned thanks to VAR in the 33rd minute. Leeds player Diego Llorente was accused by referee Andre Marriner of tripping Southampton winger Nathan Tella just inside the left-hand side of the box. Thankfully for Leeds, VAR intervened and after checking the monitor, Marriner decided that Tella had forced the contact with Llorente.

Southampton then had a goal disallowed just before half-time, when James Ward-Prowse’s free-kick was taken just before Marriner blew his whistle, meaning Che Adam’s goal did not count – much to the protest of the Saints.

    A game of two halves

The second half saw a goal happen straight away in the 47th minute thanks to a great finish by Patrick Bamford. Tyler Roberts played a through ball from near the half-way line, exploiting the gap that Bamford had found himself in. The Leeds striker stepped over the ball, before hitting it first time from the edge of the box into the far bottom corner past keeper Alex McCarthy.

Leeds celebrate during Tuesday's Premier League result
Leeds United celebrate Stuart Dallas’s goal that made it 2-0.

A quick-fire double in the 78th and 84th minute secured the victory for Leeds. The former came when Stuart Dallas started the attack by playing it out wide to Hélder Costa, who eventually cut it back into the feet of the Northern Irish international. From a central position just inside the box, Dallas toe-pokes it, fizzing the ball past McCarthy’s right side.

The final goal of the game was a free-kick by man of the match, Raphinha. From a central position around 25-yards out, the Brazilian curled the ball into the bottom left corner. McCarthy did get his fingertips onto it, but he wasn’t strong enough to keep the shot out.

Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men will need to go back to the drawing board and regroup, with their next game being a tough away fixture to Everton in 6 days. Meanwhile, Leeds will be hoping they can ride this good result and replicate the score-line when they play Aston Villa on the 27th.
