Online the story remains a lead – and misinformation is spreading on social media too.
Trending – Three stabbing victims named and pictured
Wednesday’s biggest trending story regards the victims of Monday’s stabbing attack. The three little girls stabbed and killed were named and pictured – their images lead most of the front pages and online news media.
On Tuesday, Merseyside Police named the three girls who died in Monday’s attack on a Taylor Swift-themed dance class in Southport. They were Bebe King, 6, Elsie Dot Stancombe, 7, and Alice Dasilva Aguiar, 9. Five children and two adults remain in a critical condition
A 17-year-old boy from Banks, near Southport, has been arrested on suspicion of murder – he cannot be named because of his age.
The suspect was born in Cardiff to Rwandan parents and moved to the Southport area in 2013. Online misinformation spread rapidly with many believing the attacker is a Muslim – his religion (if any) has not been confirmed and police have not confirmed a motive.
Misinformation led to supporters of the English Defence League rioting in the street, clashing with police.
Locals have expressed their anger at the rioters and have come out to clear up the mess they have left. At least 39 police officers were hurt, with 27 taken to hospital, and a police vehicle was set on fire.
Locals said rioters attacked a mosque and smashed walls to use bricks as missiles. One shopkeeper says he lost £10,000 of stock when rioters looted his shop.
People in the town want the focus to be back on the little girls and say they “didn’t deserve” the violence that took place last night.
