Liverpool win Carabao Cup final vs Chelsea as Virgil van Dijk eases Jurgen Klopp concerns
Liverpool are the 2024 Carabao Cup champions after a Virgil van Dijk header sent the Reds into raptures with a last-gasp extra-time winner in a 1-0 victory over Chelsea. A feisty first half ended goalless before Van Dijk himself had a goal controversially disallowed for offside and neither team could break the deadlock, sending the tense affair to extra-time when the Reds captain stepped up again to take the glory. Here, Express Sport takes a look at the game’s biggest talking points, including further injury pain for Jurgen Klopp.
Klopp is now just three more trophies away from what would be the perfect end to his incredible tenure at Liverpool. Having won the first piece of silverware this season, the Reds are still in contention for the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League. Christian Horner meeting riles up Red Bull star as Guenther Steiner lands new job
This time next week we will know the fate of the season’s first Grand Prix in Bahrain. Max Verstappen is the standout favourite to take victory and make a positive start to his 2024 title defence as the Red Bull star guns down four Drivers’ Championships in a row.
Ferrari posted the quickest lap times in pre-season testing, albeit on the super-fast C4 compound tyres, and Carlos Sainz will be desperate to prove a point to the Scuderia before being replaced by Lewis Hamilton in 2025.
Mercedes, McLaren and Aston Martin will also be aiming to cling onto Red Bull’s coattails more effectively than they did last season, when Christian Horner and co wiped the floor with the opposition.
Six Nations controversy as Italy penalty ‘should be re-taken’ after video evidence emerges
Italy came agonisingly close to making Six Nations history on Sunday with their first-ever win in France, but Paolo Garbisi’s chaotic penalty in the dying embers of the match hit the post. Italy had fought back from 13-3 down to tie the match against the 14 men of France after a red card to Jonathan Danty.
The Italian forwards had won a penalty in the French half after 80 minutes had been played, giving Garbisi a golden opportunity to kick for goal and spark jubilant scenes in Italy. However, as the shot clock began to count down the ball somehow fell off the tee inside an indoor stadium.
Gary Neville twists the knife into Chelsea ‘bottlejobs’ as Liverpool snatch Carabao Cup
Gary Neville tore into Chelsea’s ‘billion-pound bottlejobs’ after Virgil van Dijk headed home in extra-time to earn Liverpool a dramatic victory in the Carabao Cup final. The Reds defender had a similar goal disallowed in normal time but made it count at the second time of asking to break Chelsea hearts with just seconds left on the clock.
Chelsea’s players collapsed to the turf in anguish as Van Dijk wheeled away to celebrate before the Dutchman was mobbed by his Liverpool team-mates. Neville, who was on commentary duties for Sky Sports, did not hold back in his assessment of the Blues as he insisted he had ‘no sympathy’ for Mauricio Pochettino and his expensive squad of players.
