Tom Dean beats Duncan Scott to gold as Great Britain claim stunning one-two in 200m freestyle
The Times says Great Britain achieved their best Olympic swimming result in modern history as Tom Dean and Duncan Scott clinched gold and silver in the final of the men’s 200m freestyle in Tokyo. It is the first time since the 1908 Olympics in London that British swimmers have claimed a “one-two” in an Olympic swimming final, and it had been just as long since Britain had had a champion in men’s freestyle, the blue-riband swimming stroke.
Dean, a 21-year-old from Maidenhead who was inspired by watching Michael Phelps swim during the 2012 Games in London, became the second British Olympic rookie to win gold at the aquatics centre in the space of a few hours, following Matty Lee’s victory with Tom Daley on the diving boards yesterday.
