Toddler and man fatally stabbed in German park
A two-year-old boy and a 41-year-old man were killed in a stabbing at Schöntal Park in Aschaffenburg, Germany. Two others, including a child, were seriously injured.
Police arrested a 28-year-old Afghan man near the scene. Authorities said he had a history of violent behaviour and mental health issues. He had been detained at least three times and was awaiting deportation after his asylum claim was rejected.
The attack occurred at 11:45 AM local time and involved a kindergarten group. Bavaria’s interior minister, Joachim Herrmann, stated there was no immediate indication of a radical Islamic motive, and a search of the suspect’s room revealed nothing suggesting extremist intent.
Bavarian state premier Markus Söder condemned the attack as “cowardly and despicable.” The victims included a Moroccan boy and a German passerby. Police confirmed there is no ongoing threat to the public as the investigation continues.
The incident comes amid a rise in attacks in Germany and weeks ahead of the federal election on February 23.
