Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Wednesday’s front pages continue their coverage of the hunt for the Titan submarine, which went missing with five people on board while on a dive to the wreck of the famous Titanic.
The back pages are dominated by Australia’s Ashes win. England lost the first Ashes Test by two wickets at the end of a thrilling final day of wildly careering fortunes that captivated a near-sell-out Edgbaston crowd.
’24 hours left to save Titanic sub’
The Mail carries pictures of the five people on board the sub above the headline: “24 hours left to save them”. The Daily Mirror and Daily Express both have the headline: “Praying for a miracle.”
The Guardian says whilst those onboard the sub deserve our concern, the paper looks at the differences between attempting to save those on board and the response to the migrant boat sinking last week.
The New York Times alleges that the company behind the mission, OceanGate, had received warnings from one of its former employees about the vessel. In 2018, David Lochridge started work on a report in which he called for there to be more testing of the crafter and stressed the potential dangers.
‘No Thatcher-era tax breaks’
The i newspaper leads with its own analysis, which suggests Tory-held seats in the so-called Blue Wall in the south-east of England will take the biggest hit from interest rate hikes. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt’s constituency could be one of them.
The Financial Times says Hunt has ruled out Thatcher-era style tax breaks to help people struggling with with mortgages because they might undermine efforts to “strangle” inflation. The Sun agrees such action would be unfair on “skint renters” but accuses the Bank of England of failing to act decisively when “inflation first rose”.
