There are a variety of stories dominating Friday’s front pages including reports on rail union leaders who have called for strikes, the latest from the upcoming coronation and the latest from an official investigation into BBC chairman Richard Sharp probe.
Rail union strikes
The Daily Mail described the timing of the action as “vindictive,” and accused bosses at the Aslef and RMT unions of targeting the FA Cup Final, the Epsom Derby, and the Eurovision Song Contest. The Daily Express accused the train drivers’ union of a plan to “wreak havoc” on some of the nation’s best-loved events.
The Metro and The Sun also criticised the strikes, with the former saying the timing will hit Ukrainians at Eurovision and “ruin” the Cup final for fans, while the latter accused rail-strike chiefs of being “spoil sports.”
Sharp breached rules
Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph and The Times reported on an official investigation that found BBC chairman Richard Sharp breached the rules by failing to declare his involvement in an £800,000 loan to Boris Johnson before being appointed, with the latter calling the findings “damning.”
The Daily Mirror led on the “forgotten famine” in East Africa, where one person is said to be dying every 30 seconds due to the worst drought since the 1984 famine.
Finally, the Daily Telegraph and The Times reported on Baroness Benjamin, who has been chosen to carry the “Sovereign’s Sceptre with the Dove” during the King’s coronation, with the former saying her role sends out a message of diversity and inclusion.
