Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
There are a few stories on the front pages of Monday’s newspapers, including the news Diane Abbott has been suspended pending an investigation into a letter she wrote to the Observer about racism. Another lead topic is the rescue mission to evacuate British diplomats and their families from war-torn Sudan.
Sudan evacuation
The Daily Express reports that British citizens in Sudan are begging ministers not to abandon them amid escalating violence. Rozen Ahmed, a British-Sudanese woman, recounts her harrowing experience of spending six hours hiding under a bed with her family without water. She travelled to Sudan for a funeral but has been staying in an area that has been “shelled to shreds”. Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph accuses the Foreign Office of failing to learn from the “disastrous evacuation” from Kabul in 2021, and there are concerns within the Cabinet about the handling of the situation in Sudan. Officers from Saudi Arabia’s navy are pictured in the Financial Times, carrying a child onboard their ship as they evacuate citizens from Sudan.
Diane Abbott suspended
The Times reports on a Labour row over racism after Diane Abbott was suspended from the party for suggesting that Jewish, Irish, and Traveller people suffered prejudice but not racism. She has since apologised and withdrawn her remarks, but the former shadow home secretary is fighting for her political career. The Financial Times says Rishi Sunak will hold a series of summits with corporate leaders to repair the damage done by the Brexit years and to fend off Labour’s attempts to become the party of business. The Daily Mirror reports on Sir Rod Stewart’s call for nurses to receive a fair pay rise and his support for striking NHS staff.
Emergency test farce
Meanwhile, the Daily Telegraph describes the national emergency alert system test as a “farce” after up to 10 million phones did not receive the 10-second alert. The Times says a review will investigate the cause of the failure.
