Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Most of Wednesday’s front pages lead with images of nine-year-old Olivia Pratt-Korbel – who was shot dead at her home in Liverpool.
Olivia’s death is the focus of many papers including the Daily Express, which reports “Just a child” on its front page. Whilst the Daily Mirror says “unbearable” The Sun reports “Gunned down at bedtime and left to die.”
The Daily Mail says the murder “stunned” Britain and cops have vowed “not to rest until those who are responsible are put behind bars.”
The Guardian reports the attempted public killing of a senior gang member led to Olivia mistakenly being shot dead. Whilst the i reports that neighbours have told them the death has left them feeling “sick” and fearful.
Local paper, the Liverpool Echo makes an emotional plea asking those who might know more about what happened but are choosing to keep quiet need to ask themselves who’s side they are on.
GB news on the front pages
The Daily Telegraph uses its front page to report that there are fears European support for Ukraine’s war against Russia could end as the “cost of living crisis bites.”
The Financial Times says charities are warning of a homelessness “precipice” as a result of the rising energy bills and record rents. Charities have written a letter to the Tory leadership hopefuls calling or them to honour Tory manifesto commitments to ban “no fault evictions” and end rough sleeping by 2024.
England football news: Jill Scott retires
Many of the papers report on the retirement of England footballer Jill Scott, who made her announcement just a day after teammate Ellen White said she was hanging up the boots.
The Daily Mail says it’s hard to imagine an England squad without Scott, saying she was there when women’s football was “on the periphery” and there “when it reached the pinnacle.”
Whilst the Guardian says while Scott is making her final goodbyes to the sport she stressed “no sad faces” – saying there had been “too much fun for any tears.”
