Today’s news summary – Paper Talk
Many of Tuesday’s front pages focus on the expansion of the vaccine rollout, with booster jabs set to be offered to the over-50s and 12-year-olds being offered a first dose within days – as part of the government plans to fight Covid this winter.
UK vaccine rollout
The Sun calls the vaccine rollout a “jabs blitz” and details the plans to offer a single dose to 12-to-15-year-olds as well as the booster programme for the over-50s.
The Guardian describes it as a “widespread acceleration” of the vaccine rollout, as Boris Johnson prepares to set out his “Covid winter plan”.
The Daily Express says the PM is “confident” his winter plan won’t involve another lockdown – but the Daily Mail focuses on the “gloomy assessment” of the chances of avoiding disruption over the winter.
The Daily Mirror focuses on conflicting advice from experts over children and jabs, and warns it “may spark vaccine hesitancy among parents.”
However, The Mirror’s editorial accuses the PM of relying solely on jabs to deal with the pandemic, and suggests Covid passports “would be another weapon in our armoury.”
The Times acknowledges the decision to offer vaccines to children “might have come earlier”, but insists it’s “the right course”.
