This Netflix thriller has a perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and is an ideal Christmas scarefest

What’s more festive than scaring yourself silly? Netflix has the perfect answer if you’ve had your fill of snowy landscapes and elf antics.

Take a break from your umpteenth rewatch of Elf, Home Alone, and The Holiday, and instead dive into the psychological horror that examines the refugee experience.

This hidden gem is a strong directorial debut from Remi Weekes, with an impressive perfect critics score on Rotten Tomatoes and the audience not far behind at 73%.

Horror fans can also catch some familiar faces in this 2020 scarefest as Doctor Who’s Matt Smith and Loki’s Wunmi Mosaku.

The synopsis reads: ‘A refugee couple makes a harrowing escape from war-torn South Sudan, but then they struggle to adjust to their new life in an English town that has an evil lurking beneath the surface.’

It’s almost impressive this film has managed to sail under people’s radars for so long, especially with Gangs of London star Sope Dirisu in the leading role as Bol Majur.

Often horror films can be filled with jumpscares and gore, with little emotional or societal payoff but this doesn’t seem to be the case with His House.

‘Excellent. An intelligent horror thriller with a social drama behind and a superb finale. Food for thought!’ one viewer Luis M D shared.

Shaun K added: ‘Brilliant movie. It’s horror with significant depth.’

His House is said to be a supernatural horror with ghostly goings-on that will chill you to the bone, with a perplexing ending for anyone who likes their bark with some bite.

The film had its world premiere at Sundance Film Festival in January 2020 before being picked up by Netflix.

In 2021, His House won Remi a Bafta for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer while being nominated for two other awards.

At the British Independent Film Awards, the British director took home Best Director while Wunmi won Best Actress, along with two other wins and 11 more nominations.

If you want to stay Christmassy, there’s a whole subgenre of Christmas horrors you can dive into starting with absurd comedy Violent Night starring David Harbour

It has been on everyone’s watchlists since it was finally released to a streaming service in the UK for Sky customers and NowTV subscribers following its 2022 debut.

Or go more classic with Billy Bob Thornton’s miserable swindler take on Santa in 2003’s Bad Santa.

However, don’t sleep on this supernatural horror or it just might haunt you.

His House is available to watch on Netflix now.
