Both our bodies and wallets will be grateful when it’s warm enough to turn the heating off. And thankfully, we don’t have long to wait.
Researchers have analysed Met Office data from the past five years to figure out the date when Brits are likely to be able to switch their heating off. And this year’s date is….
April 1st.
No, it isn’t a joke. From this week, temperatures are predicted to finally consistently go beyond 14 degrees, meaning the cold spell we’ve faced of late should be coming to a close.
Though there isn’t a specific temperature that heating should be turned off, ‘once the outside temperature reaches more than 14°C it is generally warm enough to do so,’ according to BestHeating’s technology expert Jess Steele.
It looks like we’ll hit the magic number by April Fool’s day, but the big heating turn off comes 10 days later this year. Normally it’s March 22, according to the research by Jess’ team.
She said there’s a ‘common misconception’ that heating should go off when the clocks go forward for British Summertime, which this year is March 26.
For many the bright forecast will be exciting news, with electricity bills at a high and the cost of living crisis leaving Brits strapped for cash. Of course, many will have turned off the heating already.
After a unseasonably cold start to March, the weather is expected to be back on track for an average spring, with temperatures in previous years having reached as high as 17 degrees around now.

Jess suggested we should be cleaning radiators, updating thermostats and servicing boilers to get the most out of the heating at home.
It’s important to keep the heating on when it’s needed, despite the rising cost of energy, as there are health risks associated with being too cold.
