This ‘genius’ hack will elevate your festive look in seconds — and it’s bang on trend

It’s no secret that Christmas can get rather expensive, so any tricks to save money are always appreciated, especially when it comes to dressing up for parties.

And where else would you find the best hacks these days but on TikTok?

The TikTok girlies are at it once again, and this time they claim to have found a cheap and cheerful way to elevate your festive look.

Not only are DIY bow earrings the hottest new craze on social media  — it couldn’t be easier to make a pair for yourself.

Ribbons and bows have taken over the internet of late, with giant hair bows spotted on celebs on the red carpet, and influencers even tying satin ribbons all over their Christmas trees instead of baubles.

It’s an oh-so feminine trend that quite honestly feels perfect after the last few months were jam-packed full of epic girl power in the form of the Barbie Movie and Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

So how do you do it?

A speedy tutorial was shared online by Caroline Lord (@carolinetlord) that’s viewed over one million times, with fans branding it ‘genius’, ‘revolutionary’, and ‘life-changing’.

In the clip, Caroline simply takes a small gold hoop earring and a relatively thin piece of red ribbon.

She threads the ribbon through the hoop in her ear, tying a knot to secure it in place, then ties it into a bow, which covers up the hoop on her ear, making it look like a completely different earring altogether.

And that’s honestly all there is to it. If you already have hoop earrings at home, and some spare ribbon from your Christmas wrapping, then this won’t cost you a penny to do.

But if you need to buy ribbon, then this is still a pretty cheap hack, as a number of stores sell it for £1 a roll or less, including Hobbycraft and Flying Tiger.

For £1 this makes the DIY earrings an absolute steal, as designers such as Simone Rocha are currently selling bow earrings for £295.

But if studs are more your vibe, you can also make DIY versions as well.

You could also hang mini baubles off of your hoops for a fun, festive look! (Picture: Courtney Pochin/Metro)

Simply make your bow with the ribbon, then take any pair of stud earrings you like and carefully pierce the stud through the middle of the bow.

Pop it in your ear, put the back on and voilà!

We gave the hack a go, and while it was a little fiddly at first to tie the bow in the right way and in the right place, we soon got the hang of it, giving the tip a big thumbs up.

It’s not a look that’s going to be for everyone, but if you get it right, it looks super cute.

And it’s not just bows that work for this, you could add just about anything to a plain hoop – miniature baubles hook on very well and look very fun!

Alternatively, you can play around with any festive adornment – from tinsel to sequins – to create your own bespoke jewellery that’s merriment personified.
