We all know the cost of train travel has soared, but there’s a new way to save if you’re opting to explore Europe by rail.
However, it’s a rather permanent statement.
Austria is offering free rail travel for a year – if you get a tattoo.
But it’s not just any inked design. Anyone brave enough will need to get a tattoo of the rail card name, Klimaticket, etched onto their skin – and in return they’ll get a saving of more than €1,000 (£850).

The deal for a Klimaticket, or Climate Ticket, was offered by Leonore Gewessler, Austria’s climate minister.
To promote the campaign, Leonore herself got a tattoo at a music festival last weekend – however, it was a temporary, soluble one.
The festival she attended, in the town of St Pölte, was offering free single-ticket rail cards to the first three people who got the word ‘Klimaticket’ permanently inked on their arm.
It’s since been reported, by newspaper Salzburger Nachrichten, that six people took advantage of the promotion over the weekend, while last month around 30 festival attendees of Electric Love festival snapped up the offer with tattoos.
But it’s safe to say that some critics have accused Leonore of exploiting young people and using their skin to advertise her political agenda.
Henrike Brandstötter, an MP for the Austria’s NEOS party, said: ‘Offering people money for putting advertising under their skin reveals an unacceptable view of humanity from a government minister.’
