European Super League
The European Super League (ESL) is a proposed annual club football competition that would be contested by twenty European football clubs, although only twelve clubs joined. The ESL caused widespread backlash and the ‘Big Six’ – England’s six biggest football clubs – withdrew.
A series of shock events over a roughly 48-hour period saw nine of the 12 ultra wealthy football clubs that wanted to form the league pull out, but that wasn’t the only unexpected development. Fans were furious that their favourite clubs were going to get richer from this arrangement, and they lambasted them for turning their backs on the current league structure, which is widely seen as problematic.
