Henry Cavill’s Geralt of Rivia is one mean fighter, a skillset that he’s demonstrated time and time again ever since The Witcher first premiered in 2019 on Netflix.
The new full trailer for season 3 volume 1 – which is dropping later this month – has teased fight scenes that could be the lead character’s most brutal and bloodthirsty ever before Liam Hemsworth takes over the lead role… perhaps even rivalling the iconic sequence from the first ever episode.
The two-and-a-half-minute teaser opens with Geralt alongside his surrogate daughter Ciri (Freya Allan) and his former flame Yennefer (Anya Chalotra), all three of them approaching a statue in a ruin that’s surrounded by flowers.
‘Neutrality. It won’t get you a statue, but it’ll certainly help in keeping you alive,’ Geralt remarks, perhaps hinting at a choice that will have to be made between survival and picking a side in a war.
Having previously been trained in the ways of the Witchers at Kaer Morhen, Ciri is now working on learning to control the immense magical power that she holds within, honing her skills with Yennefer watching over her.
As a brief scene shows a property being torched to ashes, Geralt stresses that he ‘won’t abandon Ciri’, having become like a father to her throughout their treacherous journey.

Responding to what Geralt previously said about neutrality, the faithful and entertaining bard Jaskier (Joey Batey) responds: ‘Neutrality has consequences too.’
‘You’re right,’ Geralt admits… a reply that unnerves Jaskier greatly.
In high-octane scene that will undoubtedly leave viewers on the edge of their seats, Geralt gets a man that he’s fighting with into a headlock, using his sword, bring the weapon around from the back of his neck and slicing him to death along the way as blood spurts out.
Someone is shown travelling at hyper-speed through a portal, as Yennefer emphasises the importance of Ciri’s role in the mysterious sequences of events that continue to plague them.
‘Everything that’s happening – it’s all connected. And she’s at the centre of it,’ the mage states.
Meanwhile Tissaia (MyAnna Buring), Yennefer’s mentor, warns of Ciri’s significance: ‘If war is coming, there is no hiding her from it.’

The villainous, fire-loving Rience (Chris Fulton) is back, blasting flames as Yennefer is also seen using her powers to manipulate a blaze.
Geralt and Yennefer may be at a frosty point in their relationship, having previously been lovers before being drawn apart, but in season three, they’re set to attend a very glamorous ball together.
While the former dons an uncharacteristic silver floral jacket for the occasion, Yennefer selects a halterneck bedazzled top, as she asks her monster-fighting companion: ‘Are you sure about this?’
‘Are you?’ he retorts, as they join in the dancing together – for what aim, we’re yet to find out.

The latest season of The Witcher will of course feature more gruesome, terrifying creatures, with Ciri being forced to prove everything that she’s learnt in the art of warfare while taking on monsters both single-handedly and with help.
Teasing that what lies in store in the future may be more threatening than what they’ve experienced in the past – which is saying a lot – Geralt states: ‘History has a way of repeating itself.
‘The dangers we’ve seen foretell an even more menacing future.’
Amid those dangers, Geralt admits that he understands ‘real fear’ for the very ‘first time’ in his life, as his bond with Ciri grows.
‘We’re Witchers,’ she says, while the duo are sharing a moment on a clifftop.
One scene shows Geralt in a forest with a silhouetted figure – who we’re assuming is Yennefer – as they share a kiss under the moonlight.
Savage battle scenes, horrific monsters, burning romance and a father-daughter duo taking on their enemies – we’re ready for it.
The Witcher season 3 volume 1 is due to be released on Thursday June 29 on Netflix.
