George Russell Claims Pole Position at Chaotic Singapore Grand Prix

George Russell has secured pole position for the 2025 Singapore Grand Prix in a thrilling qualification session marked by drama and intense competition. The Mercedes driver edged out his rivals to claim the front spot on the grid, positioning himself for a strong performance in the race.

The Story Behind the Pirelli F1 Pole Position Award

Once the dust settles from a chaotic Formula 1 qualifying session, the driver on pole receives not just bragging rights, but also a unique trophy—Pirelli’s Pole Position award, a small replica tyre. This award, relatively new to F1, made its debut at the 2018 Australian Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton taking home the inaugural trophy after posting the fastest qualifying lap.

    A Unique Trophy

Pirelli’s Pole Position trophy is a carefully crafted, 60% scaled-down replica of a real Formula 1 tyre, measuring 330mm in diameter. The idea originated during testing sessions ahead of the 2018 season, with the aim of celebrating the skill and prowess required to achieve pole position.

From Testing Tool to Iconic Trophy

The mini tyre starts its journey as a testing tool and is then sent to Pirelli’s facility in Milan, where it undergoes transformation into a trophy. Here, teams engrave the F1 and Pirelli logos along with a map of the respective circuit on each tyre, ensuring each award is unique to its location.

    Presentation and Aftermath

The Pirelli team members carry the trophy to each race weekend, safeguarding it in their hand luggage. At the end of qualifying, the fastest driver is presented with the trophy, which is then signed and handed to their team. The Pole Position trophies often end up displayed in team headquarters, or sometimes are donated to museums, with others auctioned for charity purposes.

    George Russell’s Achievement

Following his triumph in Singapore, Russell’s Pole Position Award will take pride of place in the reception area of Mercedes’ Brackley factory. He joins a select group of drivers who have earned the accolade, adding another trophy to his growing list of achievements.

In the world of Formula 1, the hunt for pole position remains one of the most exhilarating aspects of race weekends, with each tiny tyre representing the effort, skill, and competitive spirit of the sport’s elite.
