The most popular baby names of 2023 have been revealed and there’s been a major change to the girls’ top 10 this year.
Experts from babycentre.co.uk have revealed their annual list of the most popular names from the last 12 months, analysing data from tens of thousands of new arrivals to shed light on trends and create the all-important top 100 list.
A number of classic names make up the top 10 spots, but it seems the number one choice for girls has changed since last year, with Sophia falling from the top spot down to number 8.
The name has been replaced as most popular by Olivia, in a move that likely won’t come as much of a surprise to anyone, as it’s been at the on top of the list for years.
Olivia is closely followed by Amelia, Isla, Lily and Ava to round out the top five spots. And for the boys, the number one name is still Muhammad, as it has been for several years in a row.
Noah has taken the second spot, with Theo in third, Leo in fourth and Oliver in fifth place.

As well as this, Babycentre also identified a number of naming trends from this year, with Taylor Swift and her epic Eras Tour proving to be a big source of inspiration for parents.
A number of her song titles and lyrics have been given as names to babies in 2023, including August, which has been used for both boys and girls, and Willow which has soared right into the girls’ top 10.
Other Swiftie-themed monikers you might consider include Dorothea, Marjorie, Mary, Ronan, and Taylor.
As well as these, experts claim there’s been a rise of late in unusual spellings of late, with variations of common names being a hit with mums and dads.
Among these, they noted that 17 variations of Aiden were registered this year, while Eliana had 10 different spellings.

This comes after it was revealed that floral names were set to become the biggest baby name trend in 2024.
After analysing data from 1906 to the present, experts predicted the top 10 flora and fauna-inspired names that we can expect to see rising in popularity over the next 12 months – with the top three being more off-the-beaten-track monikers on both lists.

The list included names such as Juniper, Azalea, Blossom, Orion, Rowan, and Ren.
In addition to this, it’s thought that names associated with the sky and atmosphere will fly high in 2024, so we’ll be seeing more monikers like Aero, Sky and Storm.
Likewise, ‘feminine feminist names’ were another top trend – all thanks to Barbie– so the likes of Guinevere, Mavis and Billie will rise up the ranks.
